WAGNER: Elizabeth Peyton

Opening: 25 FEBRUARY 2011 - Closing: 15 MAY 2011

WAGNER: Elizabeth Peyton

In very broad, bold brush-strokes Elizabeth Peyton has evoked Jessye Norman & Gary Lakes as Sieglinde & Siegmund, in Richard Wagner’s Epic Die Walküre.

In finer lines, she has sketched/etched the Three Rhinemaidens/Norns.

Wotan & Brünnhilde receive the same treatment, but with a dash of Color.

Peyton’s Portrait of Wagner—colored-pencil, on paper—has him glancing apprehensively to his left, as though a Police-Detective from Dresden has just arrived with a Warrant for his Arrest, as there was a Price-on-His-Head, connected with the 1848 Revolutionary-Uprising there…

The bold, broken strokes, palely-colored, are also evident in Giant, Tristan and Isolde. The two Human-Faces represent Malvina & Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld.

Tristan und Isolde proved to be a Deadly-Opera for Schnorr von Carolsfeld, who died on-stage during a performance.
